Microsoft, You Had Us All in the Palm of Your Hand. And You Blew It.

Before we begin with the Xbox One bashing, and I assure you, that is coming, let me start this train off a little differently.  Let me tell you a story.  One of great nostalgia that I am sure many of you can relate to, and one that was the beginning of entire new era of gaming: Online.

The year was 2004.  I was in the 7th grade, and a game by the name of Halo 2 had just come out.  I
honestly don't remember how I got my Xbox.  I have no memory of it at all, actually.  Perhaps I got it from a friend, or at a used video game shop, perhaps I even bought it new with the little amount of money I had saved up at that time, and while I don't remember how I obtained my first Xbox, I do remember my first xbox live experience.

It came in the form of Halo 2.  When I bought the game, it came with a 2 month trial of Xbox live Gold (Yeah, two whole freaking months.  Those were the days, weren't they?).  My cousin and I would come home from school every single day, sit down, and play Halo 2 for hours and hours.  We started off pretty terrible, having only played the original Halo a small amount, and now with Xbox live fully enabled we found a plethora of skilled players that would often times wipe the floor with us.  But, as with everything, the more we practiced, the better we got, and the more games we began to win.  Hours would go by, we would make a custom game of our own and practice sniping each other.  One of us would run across the map, and the other had to get a head shot (if you hit the body, you had to wait for the shield to recharge) before reaching the other side of the map.  He was always way better than me.  To this day I'm not the greatest sniper, and I much prefer the Shotgun/bunt technique that I became known for in those days.

Those days were greatest.  And I mean greatest.  I would regard them as some of the best gaming memories I have, and a large part of that was because of xbox live itself.  I had played shooters in the past, Jetforce Gemini was one of my favorites on the N64, Goldeneye was always a good time, and I even enjoyed playing some Metroid Prime 2 when my friends were around.  But none of them could even begin to compare to the amount of fun I had playing Halo 2.  There was no screen peeking, it was all based on skill, each matchw as with different players, you had to figure out there strategies, how they played.  You'd make friends, form a "clan", do some 2v2 or 4v4.  If someone beat us, we would call them out.  We would challenge them to a custom match.  If we won, it was the most amazing feeling, if we lost it kind of sucked, but we would always move on.

It was then that I swore by the Xbox.  I had always been a Nintendo Junky up until that point, but that experience changed me, and at that time the Xbox was king.  It wasn't long after that, that the console wars began.  PS3 vs. 360.  Who in there right mind would go for PS3?  I would mock Sony, and I knew very few people who would argue for them.  We would talk at the lunch table at school and everyone agreed that the 360 would be the victor of this.  And in many ways they were, for a very long time.  Some could argue that because the Wii made the most money, that it was the victor, but for us hardcore gamers, we know that this wasn't the case.  The 360 was the fan favorite, Xbox live was very well accepted, even with the $60 yearly fee.  It only grew from there, and Xbox Live was practically a must have if you owned an Xbox.

When Call of Duty 4 hit the scene we suddenly had a war between Halo and CoD.  People were flocking to each side, and while I did enjoy CoD in it's glory days, I would always stand up for Halo when it came down to it.  The best part about this war between gamers was that it was practically all based on the 360.  We suddenly didn't have a console war at all, PS3 and Wii were no where to be found, it was strictly between Call of Duty on the 360 or Halo... On the 360.  Sure, CoD was on the PS3, but lets be honest with ourselves, that is simply not where the demand was.

And because of this, Microsoft out shined Sony for a long time.  Practically throughout the entire era of of 7th generation consoles.  And while in recent years I have found myself personally playing PC games more than a console, I still stood of for the 360 for quite a while.  In fact, when the first wind blew of the "Xbox 720", as it was known as for a point, I was very excited to see what Microsoft had in store for us.

Then word got out.  A lot of words, actually.  Xbox One wasn't going to allow you to share games with friends.  Used games would be gone forever.  The Kinect came standard, and was built in, there was no turning it off.  You were online all the time, and if you did not have an internet connection, then the console was as good as a brick.  The Kinect was always on, you had no choice in this matter.  It was always watching, always listening.

One stream of shit after another came about.  It seemed like every single day something new came out that was revealed about the Xbox One, and it was always stupid, controlling bullshit, that didn't allow gamers any sort of freedom.  You did what Microsoft wanted because you didn't have a choice, and that was final.  Either like it, or "Stick with the 360" was what we were told.

Well I will say that I did not stick with the 360.  Nor did I move on to the Xbox One.  No, I chose to jump across that gap.  To take a look from a different direction.  I chose Sony.  I chose the PS4.  And I'm not the only one, practically all of my friends, the one from high school that would bash the PS3 and swear by the 360, every last one of them decided that the PS4 was better.

And this is where we get into the sticky stuff.  The stuff that really, really peeves me off.  This is where my tone towards Microsoft is going to change because I am really annoyed with this company right now, and let me tell you why:

What the hell is this "entertainment system" crap.

I'm sick of hearing Microsoft call their system an "entertainment system".  I get why they do it (because it is), but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it.  They might as well have just slapped every hardcore gamer in the face.  Every one of us who swore by the 360 as the superior console of the 7th generation.  The Xbox One is not a gaming console, they've made that pretty clear, instead it is an "entertainment system".

Between never hearing a single Microsoft corespondent call it a gaming console, and the fact that they spent practically two hours at E3 tell everyone that "you can watch TV on it", I'm about all Microsofted out, and quite frankly, I feel betrayed.  Microsoft doesn't care about me, they don't care about us, all they care about is what makes the most money.

And I get it, they're a business, of course they care about making money, which is completely understandable.  However, that shouldn't be all that they care about, and they're making it pretty obvious that this is the case.  And the truth of the matter is that it's not working.  Not by a long shot.  It's too late, Microsoft, you blew it.  Nobody cares that you can watch TV on a little box in the corner that takes up a quarter of your screen.  The wife and children could care less that they can watch Netflix for $60 extra than you could with any other system.   Grandma and Grandpa aren't going to want to tell their xbox to turn on they're not going to want to use their hand to slide the screen across the TV.  Which leads us to our next biggest issue with the Xbox One.

Nobody wants the freaking Kinect

There, I said it.  Nobody wants this stupid pile of crap.  You know what I would like?  The Xbox One to be $100 cheaper.  Take the Kinect out and what do you know, there we go, problem solved!  I have never once had the urge to stand up and slap some balls around with my hands.  I don't want to swipe my hand across the screen, I want to press a button.  The one and only thing that I can ever see the Kinect being useful for, is for the Just Dance Series.  I'm not gung-ho for them myself, but I understand the appeal, and to me that makes sense.

To me, it feels like Microsoft is trying to cash in on the Wii's success.  But it's not working.  The Wii was a fun family system, do you know why?  Because it was relatable and easy to understand.  Give grandpa the controller and tell him to go golfing.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Wiimote is acting as the golf club.  When I want to play tennis on the Kinect, it doesn't feel like tennis.  It feels like I'm slapping a ball with my hand.

But honestly, that's not my biggest issue with the Kinect.  I don't personally understand the appeal behind it, but I can get that other people may be interested in it.  Some people other than myself might like the idea of talking to their Xbox, or... Doing other things that the Kinect does with it.  That being said, I feel that a pretty large majority are on my side, and think the Kinect is pointless, and a waste of money.  The sales of the Kinect were terrible, very few people bought one, especially at the steep price of $100.  So why in the hell do they make this stupid thing a mandatory add on to the Xbox One?!?!?!

I don't like to be told what to do, Microsoft.  I don't enjoy things being forced upon me.  As most people don't, and that right there is your biggest downfall.

Stop trying to force us into crap that we don't want

They forced us into the Kinect, they've forced us into having an internet connection, they've been forcing theirnot have done if the outrages and screams couldn't have been heard from every different crevice and corner that you could fall into on the internet.  It was a good move on their part, they would have lost a ton more sales otherwise, but just the fact that they tried at all was enough to muddy my mouth with their greedy bullshit, and I doubt I will be buying an Xbox One anytime in future, and if I do, it will most certainly be used.
thousands of freaking ads that they spew across the dashboard on us for years, and they tried the damnedest to force us into not being able to share our games with friends, but luckily our voice got through.  Which, might I add, they would

But you know what, while I'm hear I'll end with one more thing:

Stop trying to make an Xbox a PC.  It isn't one.  And it never will be one.

They call the Xbox an "All-in-one Entertainment System", but they could not be more wrong.  My PC is all that I need for that.  It can play DVD's, it can go online (for a hell of a lot cheaper than my Xbox), it can play Netflix (for $8 a month), I can play all the games I want (And at dirt cheap prices with Steam), I can surf the web with it easily and efficiently (because you know, it has this wonderful tidbit that is called a keyboard and a mouse).  I can do practically anything with my PC, and it is the exact definition of an "All-in-One Entertainment System", and I've already given Microsoft money for the damn operating system, so why in the hell do they find it such a necessity to make their gaming console as "PC" as possible when I could just play on my PC?!

Thanks but no thanks Microsoft.  You had all of us in the palm of your hand, and you blew it.  For now I'll stick with my PC, and when I do get a next generation console, it sure as hell won't be an Xbox One.

Oh, and did I mention that my computer doesn't watch me masturbate either?  That's always a plus.

  2. Damn, couldnt agree with you more. I got stuck with a xbox one but I know Ps4 is the better console. Graphically superior and their offerings for their costumer like 2 free (actually good) games a month is awesome. Hopefully I can afford to get one some day.

  3. at least you can admit that you are a fanboy. MS lost last generation though. in many ways, they sold the elast , they lost their gamers , and they establish no new franchises to carry into this gen. So although you though xbox was great which it was the rest of the world doesn't agree and facts back that up

  5. Nothing wrong with calling it an entertainment system. NES = Nintendo entertainment system

    1. You're not wrong in that regard, but we still need to keep in mind that the NES played games and only games. I think it's pretty obvious that games have taken somewhat of a backseat on the Xbox One and Microsoft is focusing on making their console an "all-in-one entertainment system". I just feel like it's a battle that they won't win. Sony is already an entertainment company, and they're doing very well in that regard, and Nintendo has won over a large portion of the casual market.

I just think Microsoft is too late to the game to really make an impact, is all. I suppose that only time will tell.

    2. This whole pre launch opinion piece is nice I suppose. The only problem is the consoles are out now. You could easily try out the Xbox one to make your points valid. Until then...

      Delete
  6. Um.. dude... this is your opinion... one that is certainly valid, but also not where the world is moving. If you own a smartphone you can see most things in our world are moving to hyper consumption in smaller bursts of concentration. They are spending millions of dollars getting feedback on what consumers are doing.... I am sure you will live. BESIDES.... JUST AT LAUNCH.... there are several hardcore games.... that barely touch the kinnect cost exactly the same as last gen games and generally look very similar in most ways to the games you claim to love. Might need to take up a carpentry course... so you can go build yourself a bridge and accept you are not the ONLY kind of gamer out there!

    1. One other thing... so Microsoft is off trying to stay ahead of the curve, offer us new and exciting ways to consume games, tv, movies, mini games, interactive experiences, voice commands etc etc.... and you have the audacity to bash them for this... If they don't do this.... trolls like guy come out of the woodwork and blame Microsoft for being behind the curve and not innovating.... They have no choice! Be happy they are keeping the controller and the last gen style of gaming... call of duty, battlefield 4, halo etc etc.. all coming..... But to imply innovation is somehow Microsoft abandoning the core gaming group is a joke.... 15 years ago we were all bashing two buttons looking at a 20cm tv playing games that lasted about 30 minutes a game!!! Its the future. Deal with it.

    2. No. Just no. Fanboy.

You might like the taste of Microsoft's di*k in your mouth, but not everyone does.

They are trying to steer the market in their own direction, they are trying to change the gaming industry in their own image. And the thing is, people don't want that. Gaming is bigger then ever before, and MS completely ignored the reasons WHY. Sony has focused on those reasons perfectly, and they made gamers their goal. THAT is what the gaming industry needed, THAT is what consumers wanted.

      Delete
    3. The problem I have is not with Microsoft "innovating", I'm all for innovation. I love seeing people and companies really thing outside the block.

The issue I'm having with Microsoft is that they're forcing this innovation on us. The Kinect is (as of now) mandatory. It is always on, always listening, and always watching. I could get into an entire argument about how wrong this simply is in itself, but that's not what this argument is about.

Microsoft is trying to force the industry to fit the way they want it, and trying to push us as gamers into what THEY want. If we continue to go down this path, then Microsoft will only continue to push the boundaries to see what they can get away with. I know this is an extremely obscure relation, but this is exactly what Hitler did in World War II (and no, I am not saying that they are the same thing). Hitler would try an idea, and if the public opinion did not like it, he would back off, and forget about it. He would slowly gain the trust of the people, turn their opinions in extremely small, but effective ways, and then push them to do his bidding. Microsoft tested to waters with game restriction on used games, and the public was outraged. It's only a matter of time before this idea comes out again, however, and they'll do it when the public has calmed own, already given them the money and "respect" that they want, and then have no choice but to abide by it.

I don't like things being forced on me, and that is the issue with the Xbox One.

(My apologies for that long tangent about World War II as well lol)

    4. Kinect is not always on. You can turn it off or unplug. Try Xbox one. I haven't tried a ps4 so I don't talk about it.

      Delete
    5. but if you unplug it then what would be the point in having it? hence forcing it on everyone which then raises the price in the process is what people are going on about, some people may not want to use the kinect so why should they have to pay for something they dont want?
i am the same i want an xbox one but i dont want kinect understand now? or is your xbox fanboy dillusion still working overtime

    6. For the record, I have tried neither PS4 nor have I tried Xbox One. This article is peerly speculation as to what both companies have said about what their consoles will be.

I would also like to reiterate that this is my opinion. It is nothing more than that. I voice my opinion, because if I didn't, then what would be the point of me even having a voice to begin with?

The issue with Microsoft lies not with the Xbox One, but with Microsoft as a brainwashing and controlling company. The Xbox One is probably a fine console. However with all the stuff they stuff down my throat in the process of using one, that is where my issue begins.

  9. You're wrong on the Kinect not selling much. 8 million in a month, 24 million overall. Software attachment rate was crap, though, with only one or two games that *required* it being sold per Kinect.

  11. All valid points, but let's not forget the fact that both Sony and Microsoft were on-board the "Always online and never share games with friends again" train prior to the last E3. Sony simply jumped off first.

I'm personally still irritated at both Sony and Microsoft, particularly for the apparent lack of creativity/innovation that went into the Kinect and PS Move wand thing... (It IS called a Move, right?)

As much as I enjoy the Halo series, if I ever get one of these next-gen consoles, it will probably be a used PS4, but for 3 reasons only: Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy XV, and Thief 4.

    1. Sony is far from perfect, do not take me as a Sony fanboy, because that simply is not me. I am choosing PS4 because I feel like they aren't shoving as much down my throat, and they're sticking to the "gaming" portion of their console (they make DVD players and TVs and such, so why would they need to focus on putting all these into the PS4 as well?).

And I agree with the irritation at both Sony and Microsoft between the Kinect and the PS Move, but I will say one thing, I have heard little to nothing about the PS Move since we've entered the next gen, and I think Sony took the hint and jumped off. Microsoft did the exact opposite, and figure if people don't like it, then we'll MAKE them like it.

I don't like being forced into things, and that is my biggest beef with Microsoft at the moment. Today it's the Kinect, which is already a freaking spying device that listens and watches your every move, and nobody seems to have any issue with this. I'm terrified with what our culture will be okay with in the future.

  12. This is the most 'Get off my lawn, kids!' editorial I've ever heard in the video game world. How much did PS4 pay you to write this drivel. Many out here, like myself, like the expanding functionality the Kinect brings. Anything that can help submerse the gamer into the game experience is a good thing. I like the added functionality of an entertainment system. Seems to be the natural way to evolve the technology. But I guess haters gonna hate. Especially the ones being paid to trash a competitor. PS4 blows, the end.

    1. My website gets like 1,000 views a day if that... Do you honestly think that Sony would come to me of all people to give me money? lol

This is my opinion. I wrote this because it is how I feel. I do not voice my opinion, then there is no point of me having a voice.

I thought I made it fairly clear in my post that my issue pretty much lies in Microsoft themselves, and not in the Xbox One. Perhaps I should have conveyed that point a little bit better, so my apologies on that.

I do not have a PS4. I don't even own a PS3. I'm not saying the Xbox One is a terrible console that shouldn't exist. I'm saying that Microsoft is trying to control the market by jamming tons crud down our throats. They're seeing what they can get away with, and if people continue to defend them, such as you are, then I feel that things are only going to get worse from here.

You have your opinion, I completely respect that. Mine is certainly far from fact. I would just like to reiterate that this is simply how I FEEL about the entire situation.

  13. Whatever.....when The 360 and PS3 came out all we heard about was how much better the PS3 was. The 360 is as good as dead because of the RROD, etc. All a bunch of noise at launch and the noise continued for another year or two. At the end of it all the 360 was awesome, in most living rooms in America. So I'll wait before making any judgements. Too much fanboy clutter

  14. Sony and Microsh*t both blew it IMO with the PS4 and XBone. Over-priced hardware for slightly better graphics. Neither company cares about you. They just want your money. If you feel total loyalty to any one company, you are a damn f*cktard and deserve to get ripped off by these companies. Sony really left a bad taste in my mouth this gen (reaching MS's level, which is no small feat!) and MS has always been a greedy sh*tbag of a company that I refuse to support if I can help it. You'd think these companies would realize that $300 is the magic number to REALLY start moving units. There will always be those morons who rush out to get the new consoles at launch at any price. These companies count on these people to get the ball rolling (and milk for every penny they can). What do you get for not waiting a bit and trying to be cool by getting the new consoles? Slightly better graphics, a bunch of bells and whistles that you don't need (or in some cases even want), a much higher chance of getting a console with a lot of bugs that need to be worked out, a limited library of games, (since backwards comp is now out for the 2) you need to make room for ANOTHER device on your entertainment center. I could go on but I think I made my point. You have either or both and love it, I'm thrilled for you, but I'm not jumping on the bandwagon this time.

    2. I have been called a Sony fan boy many times since I wrote this article (You didn't call me one, but other have), but I'm more on your side than anything. I don't own a PS4, I'm not rushing out to get a PS4, and there was even a point in my life where I also called Sony uncreative and greedy bastards, just as you have.

And yeah, they still are. As most large companies are. The biggest difference, to me at least, is that I don't see Sony forcing their commodities on us. The PS4 didn't come with a PS Move because they aren't trying to force it down our throats. We can still get one, sure, but they're not MAKING it happen. Microsoft is, however, with the Kinect. And that really just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, much worse than anything Sony has ever done unfortunately.

    1. I agree. As I stated in my article, I don't personally have the appeal for the Kinect myself, but I can at least understand how some people would. I just think that its asinine that Microsoft is forcing the stupid thing on us. Let the casual gamers by it separately, or at the very least have some xbox ones not be bundled with it, ad give us a price drop.

    2. end of story hey? wow. and kids and casual gamers are the only ones who want kinect? and microsoft shoving things down my throat as well as in my mouth, and this is what you haters, fanboys and trolls all believe? talk about high strung paranoid ott conspiracy theorists. you dont want a console with kinect, then dont buy it, dont want things ramming down your throat or a mouthful of other of gentleman, then keep your ignorant mouths shut. i think ill have socks older than most of you trolls and you come out with alledged gaming knowledge which makes me giggle. i was born in 1970 and my first time with a digital game was 1978 on a lcd game/watch called FIRE. I know most of you dont have clue but ive owned most if not all available platforms since and let me tell the undecided one thing, ignore this blind biased author, try the xbox one its the biggest leap in armchair gaming ive witnessed to date. got enough money left then get the ps4 as well coz itll have awesome games too. oh and ps4 is for the hardcore gamer they say....... with playroom built in.......... which needs a camera.......... some peoples hypocrisy knows no bounds. think for yourselves people. peace. x.

    3. You are retarded. I was born in 1990 and it seems I have a greater grasp on gaming knowledge than you currently have acquiesced. The camera for the playroom is only required to use the interactive portions of the playroom, if you knew what you were talking about, you would also realize that all the comments accumulated on the page, are opinions. So, in reality, everyone on here is "thinking for themselves". The PS4 is for hardcore gamers because it's about this really weird mythical creature they have locked in a cage somewhere in M$'s headquarters called "GAMES". If you were a "real gamer", you would understand why the XBone is gargabe. Peace. You're a tool.

I am perfectly fine with having a civilized argument, but it makes it tough when you don't know when to capitalize a letter and are throwing words around like "troll" and "fanboy" with no real knowledge as to who I am beside this single article.

Let me know when you're willing to have mature conversation about our differing opinions, and then we will talk.
